Profile of:

Pamir Atagunduz

Prof. Pamir Atagunduz is a senior researcher and lecturer at the School of Medicine of Marmara University, Istanbul, Turkey. He studied medicine at Ege University, Izmir, Turkey, and completed his rheumatology residency at the School of Medicine of Marmara University, Istanbul, Turkey in 2001. He received his professor title in internal medicine on 26.01.2011. Dr. Atagunduz's first publications on the field of SpA with a focus on the pathogenesis of SpA, esp. the molecular mimicry theory, date back to 2004 and 2005 for which he worked at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Campus Benjamin Franklin (CBF) under the supervision of Prof. Joachim Sieper. (Atagunduz P, Appel H, Kuon W, Wu P, Thiel A, Kloetzel PM, Sieper J. HLA-B27-restricted CD8+ T cell response to cartilage-derived self-peptides in ankylosing spondylitis. Arthritis Rheum. 2005 Mar;52(3):892-901. PubMed PMID: 15751060 and Kuon W, Kuhne M, Busch DH, Atagunduz P, Seipel M, Wu P, Morawietz L, Fernahl G, Appel H, Weiss EH, Krenn V, Sieper J. Identification of novel human aggrecan T cell epitopes in HLA-B27 transgenic mice associated with spondyloarthropathy. J Immunol. 2004 Oct 15;173(8):4859-66. PubMed PMID: 15470026.) His current research activities are directed toward improved biological therapies for patients with Spondyloarthritis. He has developed a dedicated clinic for patients with AS at Marmara University School of Medicine (MUSoM) which serves as a resource for teaching in the division of rheumatology and a cohort for future AS studies. He is currently the PI on three MUSoM-funded studies examining the role of genetics on the severity of AS and enteropathic arthritis. He is also serving in the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis International Society. and more recently he has also served on a Rheumatology Federation of Turkey-sponsored panel to develop clinical research guidelines in both axial spondyloarthritis and enteropathic arthritis. He has organized a national rheumatology fellows training group of rheumatologists from three different universities and a radiologist for the purpose of spreading the concept of axial Spondyloarthritis and trained 315 rheumatology, physical therapy and rehabilitation fellows in Turkey. (As of March 2018 – ongoing) He has been the editor-in-chief of the Marmara Medical Journal (MMJ) between the years of October 2013 and January 2023.
