Membership types

  • Full ASAS member

Full ASAS membership is provided for experts with an established record in the field of spondyloarthritis. Full members receive all mailing and information from the ASAS Executive Committee, are entitled to attend ASAS meetings and events and are able to vote in general meetings, to propose new projects, to participate in existing ASAS activities and to be elected in the ASAS Executive Committee. Full members are also included in voting processes and Delphi exercises. Full membership needs to be renewed every five years.
  • Associate ASAS member

Associate members are either trainees or those who are developing a record in the study of spondyloarthritis. Associate members are receiving all mailing and information from the ASAS Executive Committee, are entitled to attend ASAS meetings and events, and to participate in existing ASAS activities including some Delphi exercises. They do not have the ability to conduct independent research projects, and are not able to vote in general meetings. Associate membership needs to be renewed every two years, but normally not more than once, after that time associate membership might be either lost or an associate member might be promoted to a full member.

Deadline for membership applications are January 1, June 1, and October 1 each calendar year.

Prolongation of ASAS membership

Both associate and full ASAS membership are due to timely prolongation (full membership – every 5 years, associate membership – after 2 years, normally prolonged only once). Criteria for the prolongation of ASAS membership are:

  • For full members:
    • involvement in ASAS activities:
      • attendance of at least 3 annual meetings over the last 5 years AND
      • documented participation in ASAS initiated surveys or studies during the last 5 years

    • authorship in at least 3 publications in the area of spondyloarthritis, published in peer reviewed journals in English during the last 5 years.

All current members with the expiring membership will be contacted by email to identify their continued interest in ASAS, and to defend their membership status. If no response received or members are not able or unwilling to defend their membership, their membership will expire, they will be taken out of the member list and will not further be included in the mailing list. This process is performed regularly and was lastly conducted in 2018.
