Ernst Feldtkeller

Ernst Feldtkeller:is a retired physicist and a patient with ankylosing spondylitis, with first symptoms at June 23, 1948 at the age of 16, and the diagnosis in 1959. He obtained his physics degree in 1957 from the Technical University in Stuttgard, and his Dr. rer. nat. in 1959 from the University in Göttingen. He was employed at the Siemens Research Laboratoties in Munich from 1959 until his retirement in 1992. In connection with his vocational teaching at Technical University of Munich in 1968–1986 he received the title “Professor” in 1976. More than 50 scientific publications on fundamental research in magnetic thin-film physics. About 100 scientific lectures at conferences in the USA, Japan and many European countries. In 1980, when the organisation of spondyloarthritis patients in Germany (Deutsche Vereinigung Morbus Bechterew, DVMB) was founded, he joined imediately this charity. Since 1981 he serves in this organisation as scientific editor of the membership journal “Morbus-Bechterew-Journal” (until 2003 "Bechterew-Brief"). From 1992 until 2009 he served also as Vice president of the Ankylosing Spondylitis International Federation, the umbrella organisation of national spondyloarthritis organisations worldwide. Since 1996 scientific research on spondyloarthritis epidemiology in cooperation with other spondyloarthritis researchers. Proposals for AS diagnostics and assessment in cooperation with S. van der Linden, D. van der Heijde and M. Rudwaleit. One book, 4 invited book chapters, and more than 50 scientific publications in the field of rheumatology. 10 patient-oriented booklets and more than 200 patient-oriented publications on spondyloarthritis, some of them reprinted in other languages. Awarded with the Kussmaul medal from the German society of rheumatology (DGRh) in 2007. Awarded with the Carol Nachman medal for rheumatology by the city of Wiesbaden in 2012.
